What a year!
What a year it has been for our little family! It’s hard to imagine that only a year ago we were exhausted by our stressful lives, especially mrs Snow who had a really rough time at work. The rat race was eating all our time and energy. Trying to get the kids dressed in the mornings (during winter three layers of clothing). Getting to work in time. Lunches in front of the computer screen. Trying to get back in time before the school closes and pick the kids up. Protests and crying when trying to get them home to be fed before they get even whinier. Finally complete some administrative tasks after having put the small ones to bed. Go to bed, wake up, do it all over again.
Now we live in a place where the sun shines 300 days a year. We spend time together, without stress, with the kids in the mornings and the afternoons. Mrs Snow explores new interests and friends. I work a few hours during the weekdays, without any real pressure, which brings some satisfaction and extra cash. We explore our new environment with much joy and anticipation. Hikes, playgrounds, sports, exercise, new languages and much much more. Most of all we spent much time together with all our new found friends. The children are out playing outdoors every day and adore their new school. There are so many things to be grateful for and we realise how lucky we are to have a life like this.
A thousand thanks 2019! Our portfolios grew immensely during the year and we are now in an even better place than we were going into FI-life earlier last year. We only worked full time during the first few months when we could save some money. The rest of the year has mostly been time off, moving and only some part time work for MrSnow. The main reason behind that insane portfolio increase is of course the stock market which roared with an amazing 30% during 2019. The best stock market year during the entire decade.
As we are primarily investing our stash into the Golden Butterfly portfolio model we could not match the growth of the market, but did very very well with a 25% increase. Thats above expectations for the portfolios which only have about 50 % stocks. We have much less volatility than the market and therefor a no-worry sleep. From an RE perspective we also get a higher SWR (Safe withdrawal Rate) than a 100% stock market portfolio (find that weird? – a post is coming up). When the market goes up, we “loose” (but gain growth). When it goes down we win (loose less). There is always a positive way to look at things.
Moving into the twenties
Contrary to last new year we are now only seeing possibilities and discoveries to be made. There are so many things to look forward to and nothing (on top of my head) that feels problematic. It’s a wonderful feeling that i hope as many of you share with us.
Will we stay on this magical island after our one-year-tryout? We will let you know soon enough, but we are struggling to find reasons not to. No matter what happens in the future, we will always have 2019 in our hearts.
We finish this post by sharing some Christmas pictures from our new home Palma de Mallorca. Wish you all a happy new year and an equally wonderful 2020!
